I am regularly amused by people who desire to live a grand life, but take no action whatsoever to make that life a reality. Instead of taking the power into their own hands, they wring their hands, and remain forever wishful for the life that ‘could have been’. They view those who have made it with jealousy and malcontent; as the lucky ones that life offered a break.
Yet, it’s like the great golfer Gary Player said: “The more I practice, the luckier I get.”
Success doesn’t happen by accident. A successful life is designed.
There are a few key steps that need to be taken in order to start the process of designing your life. They are:
1. Know what you want, and why you want it
This may sound foundational, but few people have real clarity about what their future must hold. Note the use of the word ‘must’. This is not a dreamy process of imagining a magical future, but rather a process of setting real objectives for yourself that will inevitably lead you to the life that you want to live.
The ‘why’ part of this process is exceptionally important. If you don’t have a strong why, when the going gets tough, as it likely will, the effort in the moment won’t seem worth the outcome.
2. Build your skill set, constantly!
Whilst 10% of your earnings should be awarded to good causes, a further 10% should be awarded to the betterment of yourself. Unless you are constantly growing in knowledge, insight and awareness about all things that your life and work include, at best you will fall behind the times, at worst you will stagnate. Living an exceptional life takes commitment to doing what it takes to make yourself into the best you that you can possibly be.
3. Take action consistently
Success doesn’t arrive unless consistent action is taken towards the desired outcome. It’s a bit like going to gym for a week and wondering why you don’t have a supermodel body. It just doesn’t work like that. Results take time and energy and only come with a consistent and focused effort.
4. Take one step more than you think you can
This is the greatest distinguishing trait between those who will bring their dreams into their life and those whose ideal life will forever be a dream. Successful people put in the hard yards. They are the ones up early in the morning building their dreams and going to bed late at night after taking definitive action. Sets daily objectives, every day, which move you towards your goals. Your day quite simply does not end unless and until you have completed those objectives.
5. Be resilient
Life does throw curve balls at us every so often. Being resilient allows us to see what is happening without getting caught up in the drama of it all. Resilience is all about recognising that we are beyond the circumstances that we may temporarily find ourselves in. Despite what life may throw at us, we are capable of manifesting our ideal life.
